Denis Diderot Engraving
In the Gamut Archives, we have a page from the 1763 edition of the Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire Raisonné des Sciences, des Arts et des Métiers (Encyclopedia, or Reasoned Dictionary of Sciences, Arts and Trades) that depict the craft of the Boyaudier, or Gut String Maker. The engraving depicts what one can imagine a typical string making shop would look like in the mid 18th century. Each part of the process is represented in the scene, and the equipment is illustrated in detail. On the backside of the engravings, there is a written description of each activity and apparatus. Below the two page images, there are details of each section.
