The Chambure Quartet:
Set of Four Polyphonic Vihuelas

One of the fascinating aspects of early Renaissance music is the use of consorts of instruments. I have always loved the blended tone of well proportioned instruments playing together. About 2000 I became enamored with the duet music of Enríquez de Valderrabano and decided to make a set of instruments to play that repertoire. With the collaboration of Edward Martin and Philip Rukavina, a model was developed in the necessary sizes and the set of four instruments were completed in 2003. The full details of the project and instrument specifications were published in an article for the newsletter for the Lute Society of America in 2005 with the title “A Set of Vihuelas: Matching Tone for Polyphonic Music.”

The instruments were used on two recordings: The Vihuela Duets of Enriquez de Valderrabano by Duo Chambure: Edward Martin & Philip Rukavina, and Canto y Danza: Dance Music and Songs of Renaissance Spain by Chambure Vihuela Quartet with Carrie Henneman Shaw, music adaptation by Mina Kaiser.

This set of instruments is a necessity for anyone seriously interested in the study of early Spanish polyphony and would be an excellent resource for an educational environment.
