Summer Newsletter 2024

Greetings From the Gamut Music Workshop—

Summer in Duluth is one of the best reasons to live in Duluth, and with the amount of rain followed by warm weather we have had recently, gardens are flourishing, the lake water is warm, and folks are scrambling to buy air conditioners. Luckily, the workshop stays cool all summer, so our workers and the strings stay at a constant temperature.

The summertime used to be the quiet time of year where we would restock strings for the fall, but this year orders have not slowed. An additional production challenge we have been facing is with treble strings. The problem is that the farmers have switched to a feed lot feeding method and discontinued the grazing they traditionally used for feeding the animals. This has resulted in the gut being coarser, and the number of threads fine enough for trebles has dramatically decreased. The supplier is aware of the issue and is trying to adjust his splitter to accommodate the changes. However, rest assured that the string workshop is diligently fulfilling orders every day.

And we are very pleased to announce that the instrument workshop has caught up on back orders, and we once again have new instruments for sale. These first three offerings are a 7-, 8-, and 11-course lute. We expect to have additional offerings over the next few months, including a Baroque guitar and more lutes. We will send a followup newsletter when these instruments become available.

We hope your summer stays cool, and we look forward to continued business with you.

Kind regards,

Dan Larson and the Gamut Music workshop
